Loats Foundation, Inc.

The Loats Foundation provides scholarship assistance to Frederick County, Maryland residents furthering their education. Priority is given to undergraduates who are orphans or are/were foster care recipients; have demonstrated economic need; have good grades and/or intend to pursue careers in public service. Eligible students at Frostburg have been Loats Foundation scholarship recipients since 1991.

During his life, John Loats (1814 – 1879) was a successful businessman, landowner, and community leader in and around Frederick Maryland. When he died in 1879, his Will established a female orphanage; his home in the town of Frederick housed the orphanage. At that time, a Board of Trustees was created and charged with overseeing the orphanage. That oversight body eventually became the Loats Foundation Board as it exists today. Once the orphanage closed in the late 1950s, the Foundation was established, and the focus shifted to providing scholarships to Frederick County students attending nearby colleges and universities.
