Butch and I met our freshman year at Frostburg and were married 53 years. A great deal of our time was spent at high school and college games, including state and NCAA tournaments. Butch’s life revolved around sports – from playing to coaching. He spent over three decades coaching in Anne Arundel County high schools, including Brooklyn Park, Severna Park, and Meade. He coached soccer, basketball, and lacrosse (a sport that he never played, but which he referred to as “basketball with a stick”). In 1972, his lacrosse team had a 9-1 record, and he was honored as coach of the year. Although Butch received many awards and honors, they never mattered to him. He loved the “game” and his players, and I believe they loved him, or at least respected him. Hopefully, the student athletes receiving his scholarship will be inspired to “shoot” for their goals and be successful. As a result of his experiences at Frostburg, Butch would hope that recipients would carry on that tradition.
