Reflecting on one’s life, most people identify a handful of pivotal moments defining it. My most vivid moments involve Frostburg State University.

  • Fall 2000- I embarked on a life-altering semester of study abroad to Australia. It was an experience that continues to influence the way I approach life. I wish I had committed to a full year.
  • May 2003- Standing under the clock tower following commencement, my parents looked at me and said, “Graduating high school was our expectation, graduating from college makes us even more proud of you.”
  • October 2003- Two months into my Masters program, I received a call informing me my dad had passed suddenly. I ate dinner in Chesapeake Hall surrounded by my friends before making the long drive back to Delaware.
  • December 2005- Just before winter break, heading into the final semester of my Masters, my mother passed suddenly. There was a snowstorm, so I spent the night in Frostburg surrounded by those who cared about me before making another tear-filled drive back to Delaware.
  • February 2006- While chatting with some friends in Echo Circle, I was introduced to the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. A study abroad student from Ireland, I couldn’t understand a word except her name: Sinead. We married in 2008 and welcomed a son, Sean, in 2012.

I have my family, friends, and Frostburg faculty to thank for making my study abroad experience a reality. They pushed me to take a risk, see breathtaking sights, to be comfortable with discomfort. My study abroad experience and ensuing world travels enabled me to see the world through new eyes, to realize that no matter how little I think I have, my life is made rich by others. It inspired me to help students stretch themselves and develop self-insight.
Frostburg State University is my family, my home. When I visit, I still feel the excitement and support I had as a student. I am honored to provide this scholarship, be a member of the Old Main Society, and to help students find success through meaningful study abroad experiences.
Many believe life is defined by the moments that happen to us. Our lives are defined by the moments we play in the life of others. It is never too early or late to make a difference; leave the world better than you found it. Start your journey by studying abroad.
