Mr. Leonard C. Schwab & Mrs. Jane Schwab
Local Couple’s Interest in Theater Leads to Scholarship
[Published circa 1997] A family’s lifelong interest in theater has led to the creation of a scholarship at Frostburg State University. The Leonard and Jane Schwab Theater and Speech Scholarship has been established by Leonard Schwab, of the S. Schwab Clothing Company, and his wife, Jane, to help students in the study of theater.
Schwab said, “We are concerned that schools don’t put on shows now like they used to when we were in school. We hope that this scholarship will help students who are interested in theater get out in the professional arena and share their interests with others.”
Schwab said that both he and his wife have spent many years actively participating in the theater. He explained, “We helped establish the Algonquin Players theater group in 1957. That was active in the area for many years.” He remains active in stage work through the Ali Ghan Shrine Club in Cumberland.
Although neither attended FSU, Schwab said that both are enthusiastic supporters of the university. “I am on the board of the FSU Foundation,” Schwab related, “and currently I am serving as the secretary. I have been active with the board for a number of years.”
“My wife and I have been interested in the theater department for several years, and have come into contact with a lot of the professors in that department,” said Schwab. Mrs. Schwab studied theater at the Leland Powers School of Radio and Theater in Boston, and has participated in several theater groups.
Note: Mr. Leonard C. Schwab & Mrs. Jane Schwab are both deceased.
