Classmates, Friends and Family of Michael L. Mackereth '78

Michael L. Mackereth, “Mack” was a native of Oldtown, Maryland, where he and his two younger brothers grew up among a close extended family. Mack attended Fort Hill High School in Cumberland, graduating as a member of the illustrious class of 1974. Mack had a successful high school career at Fort Hill and started his collegiate career at Frostburg State College in the fall of 1974.
At Frostburg, Mack was an extremely good student – class work seemed to come easy to him. Mack was viewed by his close friends as exceptionally smart, and he did well in his classes as he pursued a major in Business, graduating in 1978. During his time at Frostburg, Mack lived with a core group of friends in Frederick Hall, many of whom were friends from their days together at Fort Hill. Mack is remembered as someone who was kind, humble, athletic, and very social. Mack was confident and competitive, but unpretentious, and had an impressive sense of humor. No outing, party, card game or get together was complete unless Mack was there! Mack’s famous quote in every game of Hearts was “I’m not taking a point!”. Mack was also the consummate story teller, but perhaps most importantly, to those who were privileged to know Mack, he had a huge heart, and he was a loyal and devoted friend.
While as Frostburg, Mack met and fell in love with Beverly Ehrlich (FSU Class of ’79) and during his later years at Frostburg, Mack and Bev were inseparable. After college, Mack and Bev made their home in York, PA where Mack worked for Architectural Testing Inc. and National Certified Testing Labs. Mack worked hard and played hard. He especially enjoyed fantasy baseball and all sports, but he truly loved playing golf and he was very good at it. Mack was a founding father of the Dude’s Golf Boondoggle annual event which is now in its 22nd year. Mack also loved the water – being in it or around it. In his younger years he was a lifeguard at a popular pool in Cumberland, and as an adult, he and his family and friends enjoyed time in Nags Head on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Mack’s education at Frostburg allowed him to live a great life. Mack instilled in his kids a belief that they could achieve anything they set their minds to. He truly loved life, his close friends, and especially his wife and four talented and successful children.
