Filer Family
The Filer family is honored to establish this scholarship to benefit other local students of the Frostburg area. Ellwood L. Filer, Jr., Barbara A. Filer (’10), Kevin F. Filer (’04), Laurie E. Filer, Dr. Daniel “Danny” M. Filer (’04, ’06, ’08), and Tricia R. Filer feel that education is the most valuable resource for our future. The family wishes to pay forward the wonderful opportunities Frostburg State University has provided for them by contributing to the future of other local students.
As lifelong residents of the community, the lives of the Filer family has been greatly impacted by this local institution. Kevin and Danny began their learning on Frostburg’s campus when they both attended preschool with Mrs. McFarland in Framptom Hall and continued their experiences with Camp Bobcat, swimming lessons, and athletic practices in their youth. It is no surprise that with such wonderful experiences both attended Frostburg to pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees. Their formal education as well as camp attendance left them with fond memories and invaluable life experiences.
After 26 years at Kelly Springfield Tire Company, Barbara became a long-time employee of Frostburg, starting her career with the Admissions and Financial Aid Office in 2001 and retiring from the University Advancement Office in 2016. She was also awarded an honorary degree from the University in 2010 for her dedicated service.
In addition to the members of the Filer family who attended or were employed at Frostburg, Ellwood has been a lifelong resident of the city of Frostburg and an active member of the community through his employment at Winner Brothers Coal Company and Allegany County Roads. His belief of pursuing an education was vital in encouraging his sons to attend Frostburg State University and he supported their endeavors throughout their time in college. He still enjoys attending and supporting athletic events such as football and basketball games on campus. As new members of the Filer family, Laurie and Tricia also have a deep appreciation of the power of education. Both have earned graduate degrees in their respective fields and both have enjoyed becoming members of the community.
As a family, the Filers are honored to support the students of Frostburg State University as they gain the power of education and want to celebrate the support systems around them as each of them were supported in pursuing their Frostburg endeavors. The family endowed this scholarship so other local students can continue their learning experience at this gem in the mountains of western Maryland.
