Anne E. and William B. Wallace Jr.

The Wallace Way

“Her generosity of spirit” was the phrase used to describe Anne E. Wallace when she established a scholarship at Frostburg State University in 1993.

In creating the Anne E. and William B. Wallace, Jr. Endowed Scholarship Program to benefit sociology students, Anne’s intentions were to reach out to young people on a global scale.

“I’m truly concerned about young people today,” she said. “There are so many problems. Family life is sadly neglected and the interest in helping others has to be instilled at an early age. It is so very important to have trained counselors and teachers to listen and guide children in their developmental years.”

Anne Wallace was born in the foothills of Clear Spring, Md., and worked for the United States Government as an analyst with the Department of Interior. Her husband, William B. Wallace, was originally from Laurel Grove, Md., and had a successful career as a salesman. Anne said she was “truly blessed” with her marriage and family. She and Wallace were active members of the United Methodist Church and raised three children – William B. Wallace, III; Robert B. Wallace, M.D., and Henry E. Wallace.

In establishing the scholarship at FSU, Anne wanted to honor the memory of Dallas E. Nolan – a favorite cousin, close friend and confidant. "Dallas was an inspiration to the community. She was so caring and just loved children,” Anne stated about Dallas who was a life-long resident of Cumberland, Md., and a member of the second graduating class from the Memorial Hospital Nursing School. Dallas devoted her life as a nurse at Memorial Hospital and helped others through programs like Meals on Wheels and the Red Cross.

The spirit of Anne Wallace is also reflected in the scholarship and its intended purpose. "I did not have the benefit of a high school or college education. I thought a scholarship would be important to help students in the study of sociology,” she said. “I have received letters from the various recipients and their gratitude is touching. We made a good decision in setting up the fund and I’m proud that my sons and their family have continued to support this program. The Wallace Family has made a positive contribution to society.”

And their contribution will continue through Anne’s ongoing “generosity of spirit.”
