During the 50th anniversary celebration of Alpha Delta Chi’s founding at Frostburg, Col. Ronald Forrester ’67, a founding member and president of the FSU Alumni Association board of directors, proposed a new scholarship in honor of 50 years of ADX brotherhood. In a matter of hours after that Saturday night dance, the brothers pledged more than $15,000 to endow the group’s third scholarship.
The new scholarship, the ADX Golden Anniversary Presidential Merit Scholarship, “solidified with the community that ADX are alumni who give back to Frostburg,” said Forrester, who is also member of the FSU Foundation Board of Directors.
Forrester and ADX answered President Jonathan Gibralter’s 2010 call to create Presidential Merit Scholarships in order to draw academic standouts to FSU. “If we’re going to attract the best students, we need to offer them aid as well: good students, but their community outreach shows that they’re well-rounded people,” Forrester said. More than 300 ADX brothers returned to FSU for their golden anniversary, about half of the group’s lifetime membership. ADX was organized in March 1964 by 26 Frostburg State College students to engender “brotherhood, character, social justice, scholarship and leadership.” Those 26, along with the 52 students who pledged ADX under the original group, are considered the Founders.
Over the past half-century, those Founders have accomplished much. At least 15 served in branches of the armed forces, including three decorated Marines who served combat tours in Vietnam. More than 30 Founders served as educators with careers lasting more than three decades. They’ve become public servants, published authors, school administrators, college professors, coaches, businessmen and much more. Forrester said all the members of ADX would encourage today’s FSU students to study hard, enjoy the Frostburg community and be good citizens and good students.

A second scholarship, the Alpha Delta Chi Memorial Education Scholarship, was created by the founding brothers of ADX (1964-1969) to remember and honor brothers who have passed away, many of whom were education professionals.
